How it started....
For many years I have been interested in the mechanics of human
conversation. Whilst browsing through a BBS one day I came across
"shampage" and got rather excited about it! There is a psychology
challenge running to develope a machine which will converse with a
human so well that the human cannot tell that they are talking to a
machine. This challenge is known as the Turing test. So, coming across
shampage with its faults I contacted the author to discuss
improvements. He declined to respond to me and so BBSCHAT was born.
BBSCHAT was created as part of a serious program of psychological
research into human conversation. I have no regrets that it is a fine
entertainment, but I would be interested in any feedback you might
like to supply on the serious side of it.
In the meantime, have fun....
Release history:
Release 6.1
Slight improvement to the *object* variable. Improvement of HARRY.DAT
Release 6.0
Multiple white space in input is now reduced to single spaces to allow
matching where the human caller accidentally adds spaces between
words.

The subsequent matching process was added so that the computer
personality will chat for longer before giving up in disgust! Minor

One year on, the development continues with feedback from "Webber" and
